Thirty-three adventurous spirits will scale three of Australia’s highest and most impressive mountains across three states in a matter of hours, all in aid of Whitelion.
Whitelion and its corporate partners will take part in the fifth annual ‘Three Peaks Challenge’ from 24-26 March 2011 to raise funds for young people at risk. The challenge will take in Mt Tennant in the Australian Capital Territory, Mt Kosciusko in New South Wales and Mt Bogong in Victoria.
The climb is part of a challenge to conquer the three peaks in just 33 hours. Whitelion is a not-for-profit community organisation that supports and empowers young people at risk to reach their full potential. The organisation does vital work assisting young people who find themselves involved in the youth justice or child protection systems.
Participants from the organisation’s Young Lions leadership program will be joined by Whitelion mentors and staff and several corporate teams from the likes of Lend Lease, Victoria Police, Minter Ellison Lawyers, Colorado Group, The Nous Group and Melbourne Airport in this mammoth challenge.
Young Lions are young people who have participated in Whitelion programs and have been identified as having leadership potential. They are encouraged to act as positive role models for other participants in Whitelion programs.
Whitelion CEO Mark Watt said: ‘The Three Peaks Challenge aims to raise funds and awareness for Whitelion’s essential support of the most vulnerable young people in our society. The event is a physical and mental challenge but is extremely rewarding for all involved.
‘For the young people this is an incredible experience that they would not otherwise have the opportunity to undertake. Everyone involved develops positive and meaningful relationships with other climbers as well as experiencing a real sense of achievement at the end.’
Reflecting on last year’s event Whitelion Program Manager Allison Trethowan said: ‘The respect and admiration developed by the rest of the walkers for this group of young people has an amazing positive impact on them, and is something they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.’
Each walker raises funds in return for the chance to participate in this life changing and rewarding experience. Previous challenges have raised in excess of $100,000, ensuring the Whitelion Young Lions program can continue to empower young people to reach their full potential.
