A new book is helping those who want to learn more about the world of investment evaluate which stocks in the mining sector have the best chance of outperforming the market.
‘Sharebuyer’s Guide to Investing in the Australian Mining Boom’ by Dr Allan Trench looks at exploration, project development, individual mining companies, the concept of risk, commodity pricing and other financial considerations.
Dr Trench profiles 40 ASX-listed exploration and mining companies from eight sectors (gold, coal, copper, iron ore, nickel, diversified, uranium and other metals). His astounding findings include:
- Shareholder returns for 2010 ranged from -50% to +900%
- The average return was an exceptional 118%
- Nine companies achieved returns of 200% and above
- The median return was 37.5%
Based in Perth, Dr Trench is non-executive Chairman of ASX-listed Navigator Resources and a non-executive director of Venturex Resources, Pioneer Resources and Hot Chili. He holds a doctorate in geophysics, a master’s degree in mineral economics and an MBA (Oxon). Dr Trench is Adjunct Professor at the Western Australian School of Mines and a regular speaker at international conferences on the outlook for the mineral resources sector. He is also an Associate Consultant with CRU Group, a global independent advisory consultancy serving the mining and metals sector.
