Following the success of the inaugural Discover Sailing Day held in November 2012, local Victorian communities will once again be given the opportunity to experience the exciting sport of sailing and yacht club life first hand as part of the second Discover Sailing Day on Sunday January 13, 2013 and all activities are free.
Discover Sailing Day allows for people of all ages who may never have sailed before to participate in on and off water sailing activities and experience club life at 20 local yacht clubs around Victoria, including Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, Ballarat Yacht Club and Bendigo Yacht Club.
Families will enjoy activities including supervised sails around the bay with an experienced sailor, safety boat rides, club tours and various on-land games. Visitors at several clubs will also enjoy a BBQ lunch as they learn more about the programs and sailing courses available at their local club.
“We have recognised the need to break down some of the perceptions that our local communities hold around yacht clubs and sailing in general,” said Discover Sailing Program Manager Gavin Wall.
“This is a unique opportunity for the whole family to visit your local club, get your feet wet and have a true sailing lifestyle experience.”
Discover Sailing Day is free to attend and all boats and safety equipment will be provided by each yacht club. The Discover Sailing Host will welcome visitors to the club, answer any questions and explain the activities taking place on the day.
Visitors are required to bring clothes and shoes that are able to get wet, sunscreen and a hat, and shoes with non-marking soles are preferred.
The Discover Sailing program is designed to increase participation in the sport of sailing. Run by Yachting Victoria, the program uses its website, a range of promotional resources and a nationally-supported and research-backed brand to encourage increased club involvement and new memberships.
