Since launching at the beginning of March, Spirit of Tasmania has received nearly 300 entries. Hopefuls are invited to submit their most treasured home cooked recipes and describe in 150 words or less the stories behind them. The winning dish will be included on the onboard restaurant’s specials menu meaning the winner can take pride in the fact that thousands of people are enjoying their dish. There is also over $5,000 worth of prizes to be won.
Recipes ranging from traditional spaghetti bolognaise and stirfries through to a ‘Piranha Cake’ and ‘Convicts Crumble’ have been submitted. impressing the judges with their originality and creativity.
The accompanying stories have ranged from the fun to the poignant to the unusual. A firm favourite is that of Dorothy Oakley from Mornington who passed on her much-loved unique Waldorf Salad recipe to her sister-in-law, who wanted to make the dish for the Rotary Club. What she didn’t realise was that the club was going to be catering for a luncheon for Princess Anne and the salad would be on the menu. Princess Anne was so impressed by the salad that she later sent Dorothy’s sister-in-law a personal note complimenting her on the wonderful recipe!
