Lyric Opera of Melbourne continues to break new ground on the operatic scene, announcing its new season of never-before-seen Zarzuelas to be held in June at Chapel off Chapel.

Showcasing some of Melbourne’s most talented young up-and-coming performers, this sassy new production will be performed in English as Lyric Opera transports you to the dazzling world of bohemian Madrid in a vibrant Zarzuela double bill.

Director Nathan Gilkes says, “We are thrilled to present Melbournians with these two innovative back-to-back operas, never performed before in Victoria and possibly even Australia.”

La Verbena de la Paloma by Tomas Breton is set during a raucous street party in Madrid. On the eve of the festival, we follow Julian and Susana – young, passionate, enthusiastic (and not always successful) lovers.

Bohemios, by Amadeo Vives and based on Henri Murger’s novel, Scènes de la vie de Bohème,is a cheerful tale of a love-struck young musician with a soft spot for the beautiful and talented girl next door.

Zarzuelas are traditionally Spanish operas dating back to the 19th century that are a combination of spoken passage, song, dance and chorus, and were once very popular but fell into oblivion during the Franco period in Spain. They have recently been largely revived by Spanish tenor and conductor Placido Domingo and are popular for their easily-hummed tunes and comedic storylines.

“These two stories are a light-hearted view on life in the city – the characters are similar to modern day university students in that most of them have little money, but they all have dreams,” said Mr Gilkes.

“The Zarzuela is less of a stereotypical, serious opera and will appeal as something different for Melbournians to experience.”

With four evening shows and one matinee, Zarzuela will open on June 3 and run until June 11. Tickets are $48 for adult and $38 for concession, with $25 tickets for groups of 10 or more.
