Grand opera on an intimate scale opens this week

This weekend at Chapel Off Chapel, Prahran marks the opening of Lyric Opera of Melbourne’s innovative and striking production of Jules Massenet’s Werther. The tragic story sees Werther fall for the already-betrothed Charlotte, but will she realise her own feelings before it is too late?

Lyric is taking this 19th century opera, based on an 18th century German novella, and bringing it well and truly into the 21st century. Werther will be performed in English, is set in the modern-day and incorporates technology into the set design to transform the single stage across four seasons and multiple settings.

Rising operatic star Shanul Sharma as Werther leads an exceptionally talented cast of up-and-coming singers and seasoned performers including Margaret Plummer as Charlotte, who was recently awarded the Vienna State Opera Award. Director Suzanne Chaundy brings a wealth of experience to this unique production for her first show with Lyric, conducted by the ever-talented Pat Miller.

Recently Shanul took part in an exciting photo opportunity to promote the show, with award-winning body artist Gina Nomachi recreating the striking Werther promotional image on Shanul’s face. The streets of Armadale have never seen anything like this!

The production will run for five shows, beginning this Saturday October 18 – 26 at Chapel Off Chapel, each commencing at 7.30pm excluding Sunday 26, which will start at 3.00pm. Tickets are priced at $49.50 for adults, $39.50 for concession and $35 for children and under 35s.
