Combining the sweet romance of Valentine’s Day with the joy and celebration of a birthday, Australia’s longest standing ice cream shop Casa Del Gelato today commemorated 30 amazing years with a party at the family owned store.
Since Casa Del Gelato’s establishment in 1980, owners Ottorino and Joanna Pace have become Lygon Street favourites. Known for their friendly nature, community spirit and passion for gelato, they have thrived on bringing the tastes of Italy to Australians, overseas visitors and Italians looking for a familiar taste from home.
Award-winning gelato maker Ottorino’s commitment to the traditional artisan gelato-making methods has seen Casa Del Gelato and its delicious array of flavours become a firm favourite among Melbournians. Ottorino uses only the freshest fruit and ingredients to develop his luscious gelato, boasting around 170 flavours including fruits, creams, chocolates and soya.
Ottorino said: “I am so happy that after 30 years I can continue making pure, fresh gelato and bringing a little taste of Italy to the people of Melbourne – and what better day to celebrate doing what I love than on the day of love!”
A pioneer of artisan gelato in Australia, Ottorino brought his traditional methods to a countrywhich had only ever seen American-style ice cream.
The Pace family plan to continue using the authentic artisan method to create their delectable treats for many years to come, with new exciting flavours frequently being created and an ever growing band of loyal customers lining up outside the door.
Over the years, Ottorino has won numerous awards for his elite skill and artisan practices. In 2008 he was awarded the honourable title of ‘Mastri Gelati’ or ‘Master Ice Cream Maker’ at the 49th International Artisan Ice Cream Exhibition in Longarone, Italy.
Co-owner Joanna Pace has remained a dedicated and passionate Carlton trader over the past 30 years. She was one of the original founders of the Lygon Street Festa and the President of the Carlton Traders Association for ten years.
