William Angliss Institute is about to challenge hundreds of high school children from across Victoria to compete against each other in creating the perfect cupcake.

Students aged between 15 and 18 will have the opportunity to demonstrate their baking skills and decorative flair in the Institute’s annual ‘Schools Cook-Off Championship’ which is run in association with Melbourne Food and Wine Festival.

On Thursday 19th March, students will go head to head for the title. Competing individually or as a class, participants will be asked to create and decorate four cupcakes, using the same recipe for each. The judging panel of hospitality and culinary industry experts will then bestow titles including ‘Best Individual Cupcake’, based on flavour, texture, decoration and overall appearance.

The competition attracted over 250 entrants in 2008, with participants in the running to win prizes including a ‘Culinary Careers’ starter pack to the value of $450 and a $2,000 half day ‘Culinary Experience’ at the Institute.

Gordon Talty, Manager Culinary & Food Processing, said: ‘The Annual cook-off is a reflection of the fun and supportive environment at William Angliss Institute. It presents a great opportunity for young students to get involved in the culinary arts and actively gain an insight into the industry.’

Natalie O’Brien, CEO of Melbourne Food and Wine Festival, said: ‘We are pleased to once again be collaborating with William Angliss Institute on this exciting event. It’s a great way to engage youths and encourage them to consider the career options in the hospitality and food industries.’

William Angliss Institute has been a dedicated provider of training for the hospitality, tourism and culinary industries for over 70 years and annually provides specialist training to 18,000 enrolments that range from short course through to certificate, diploma, advanced diploma and most recently, graduate certificates and bachelor courses.
