This week is National Privacy Week 2011, an initiative organised by the Victorian Privacy Commission that aims to increase awareness of online privacy amongst Australians.
With the increasing influence of online social networking platforms, the issue of online privacy has become a growing concern.
Unless you’ve been living with your head in the ground you have probably heard of this crazy thing called social media. But did you know that everything you post automatically becomes public property? Did you know that a journalist can quote your Twitter? Have you considered that a potential employer could scroll through your tagged photos and decide whether or not to hire you?
Many people don’t understand just how exposed they allow themselves to be online.
One of the creators of the initiative, Candice Jansz, explained: “When you think of privacy, people don’t think about their Facebook photos right away.”
The Victorian Privacy Commission invites you to take part in an online survey on social networking and privacy at http://privacyawarenessweek.org
