William Angliss Institute celebrates 70 years

This year, William Angliss Institute is celebrating its landmark 70th anniversary. To mark this important milestone, the Institute will celebrate with students, industry and alumni throughout 2010.

A new building launch, a special event for industry partners from across the globe and a gala dinner are amongst the exciting activities currently being planned. A public exhibition on-site at the Institute’s main campus in Melbourne will demonstrate how its industries have changed and developed over the past 70 years.

The Institute was established in 1940, when prominent Melbourne businessman Sir William Angliss donated funds to establish Australia’s first trade college dedicated to the food industry. The ‘William Angliss Food Trades School’ was born and quickly gained the national recognition that has been associated with it ever since.

The Institute has consistently built on its strong foundations, expanding into hospitality, food and beverage service, cookery, resort management, tourism and events. During the mid-1970s, the school became known as William Angliss Institute of TAFE.

Today, the Institute is a dedicated training provider for the hospitality, tourism and foods industries, delivering a range of courses including degrees, diplomas, graduate certificates, apprenticeships and short courses. Each year over 15,000 students, 1,100 of whom are international students from over 50 countries, are trained by over 400 highly-skilled academic and support staff.

The Institute’s main campus offers first-class facilities whilst flexible learning and strong industry connections equip students with invaluable preparation for their careers. The Institute also delivers training direct to industry partners through offices interstate, four joint venture campuses in China and international consultancy projects around the world.

Nick Hunt, CEO of William Angliss Institute said: “The past seventy years have provided us with a rich history and an incredible foundation upon which to keep building. The Institute is very proud of the countless achievements during that time and growth built on our strong reputation.

“Over the years the Institute has significantly contributed towards the development of the industries we serve, with many of our graduates having gone on to make outstanding achievements in their areas of expertise.

“The Institute will continue to contribute to the advancement of these industries by consistently developing new methods of training to ensure our students graduate highly skilled. I’m certain that William Angliss Institute will keep encouraging its students to pursue their passions for many years to come.”
